In GoDataFeed there are 3 tools to categorize your products into a channel's taxonomy -- AI categorization of your feed category mappings, manual assignment of feed category mappings, and creating category rules. You can utilize one, two, or all to optimize your product categories. This article explains each tool and provides detailed steps on how to implement each in a feed.
How to AI categorize products
GoDataFeed’s AI engine analyzes your imported product type (if available), product titles, and descriptions, then cross-references them with each channel’s category taxonomy to automatically assign the most accurate, channel-specific categories.
- Start on the 'Category mappings' page:
- Click the checkbox next to one or more import category, then click the blue "Categorize" button:
-
While in progress you will see the 'Categorizing' status:
To ensure optimal performance and prevent system overload during AI categorization, the number of SKUs processed per request is limited based on the number of selected grouped categories. If you are not seeing all sku's categorized you may need to re-compile the feed a few times to see all results returned.
If selecting 10 or fewer grouped categories:
→ The system processes up to 2,000 SKUs per category, with a total cap of 20,000 SKUs.
→ A global processing limit of 5,000 SKUs is enforced for these smaller sets.
If selecting more than 10 grouped categories:
→ The system processes up to 200 SKUs per category, also capping the total around 20,000 SKUs.
→ This reduces load per category while still allowing broad coverage across many categories. - When the AI categorization completes, you will see the products in each import category (left column) have been classified into AI Categories (middle column) -- with their optimized feed categories listed in the right column.
In this example the import category 'Accessories' had 11 products that were categorized into 6 unique AI categories with optimized feed category mappings shown here:
- If after reviewing the AI-generated feed categories you would like to regenerate, click the regenerate icon highlighted below:
If a feed category mapping is not generated by AI categorization, you will see the red ! indicator, in this case you can click into the feed category field to manually assign a category mapping or create a category rule. Follow the steps in the next section.
How to manually assign category mappings
If you would like to manually assign feed category mappings instead of AI categorization, follow these steps:
- In the 'Category mappings' page, you can sort the table by clicking the dropdown menu in the top left corner and selecting to view 'All' mappings, 'Mapped' import categories only, or 'Unmapped' import categories:
- To manually select a feed category, simply click into a feed category field and browse the dropdown menu and click to select a feed category to assign:
Important
Make sure to click the blue "Save" button at the top of the Mappings table to save any time you make changes.
How to create category rules
- If you would like to create category rules to assign categories in bulk based on specific product attributes, click the 'Category rules' bubble at the top of the Categories page:
- Click the + Category Rule button:
- In the Rules editor card on the right, click 'Select a channel category' to open the channel taxonomy modal:
- Filter and sort for your department of products to find the best fit, and click the "Select" button next to the one you choose:
- Complete the conditions of the products you would like to apply the category to:
- The 'Rule name' is automatically assigned to the category you selected for this rule -- but if you would like to re-name the Rule, click the pencil icon and type in the new Rule name.
- When you've successfully created your rule, click "Save"
Remember: category rules -- like feed rules -- are applied in chronological order. This means that the last category rule will always override any previous rules if they are in conflict.
How to troubleshoot import mapping
In order to optimize your feed categories, our system needs the 'category' import mapping to be mapped to a field from your catalog that has the relevant category information for your products.
If you see this screen:
It means that your source field mapped to our 'Category' system field has no category data in it.
Action needed
In order to use automated category mappings, you will need to update the Import mapping of the 'Category' source field. Follow the steps below to do so.
How to update your Import mapping for the Category field
- Click the "Import Mapping" button on the 'Category mappings' card.
- Scroll down to the 'Category' system field on the left-hand column.
- You'll see the source field from your store that is mapped to 'Category'.
- If you're not sure which alternative source field contains your product category data, you'll need to review your import to locate this.
How to review import data
- If you find the source field from your import with category data, you'll update the Import mapping following the next steps.
- Highlight and delete the existing source field mapped to 'Category'.
- Scroll through the dropdown of your source fields and select the field that contains your category data:
- Click the blue "Save" button in the top right corner.
- Navigate back to your feed and refresh the page.
- Go to the 'Categories' page and try to assign feed mappings again.
FAQ: Help! I don't see all products categorized. How do I troubleshoot this?
To ensure optimal performance and prevent system overload during AI categorization, the number of SKUs processed per request is limited based on the number of selected grouped categories. If you are not seeing all sku's categorized you may need to re-compile the feed a few times to see all results returned.
Steps to troubleshoot
- Let's first sort the products by unmapped. In the 'Category mappings' page, you can sort the table by clicking the dropdown menu in the top left corner and select 'Unmapped' import categories:
- When this filter is applied you will see all categories unmapped. The categories that have returned an error will reflect an error symbol ones. You may want to review these sku's by clicking into the affected products or manually applying the category by typing into the right panel to pull up a list of available category strings. Be sure to click save at the top.
If you don't want to manually categorize the feed and want to try running ai categories again, you can select all on the left and then trigger the ai categorization. Once it completes you can try compiling the feed to see these values saved. You may need to compile a few times to see the results applied.
If you need additional support you can contact our support team for further assistance with an issue. Be sure to provide any affected sku's or screenshots of where you are encountering an issue.
