Google Merchant Center: Format the Product Details Field

The Product Details field in Google Merchant Center (GMC) automatically displays entries as bullet points—no HTML or manual bullets needed. Just follow the structure below so Google parses and renders each detail correctly.

Creating a Product Details Rule in GoDataFeed

Follow these steps to set up and map the product_detail field within your GoDataFeed Google Shopping feed rules.

Step 1:

Navigate to your Google Shopping Merchant Center feed in GoDataFeed, go to the Rules tab, and select the plus (+) button to add a new rule.

Name the Rule, then in the “SET” section, type in product_detail, and select the field from the dropdown.

Step 2:

In the “To” section, add the Section Name, separated with a colon, Attribute Name, separated with a colon, then the Attribute Value.

The Attribute Value can be typed as a static value or mapped to a field from your import. In the example below, the Attribute Value is mapped to a field called metafield_custom_product from the import.

To ensure this rule applies only to products with a value in the metafield_custom_product field, set the Where section to “Some products,” and use the condition:

metafield_custom_product is not empty

Step 3:

If you’d like to add multiple product details, separate each Attribute Value with a comma, and repeat Step 2.

If the Attribute Value contains commas, wrap that value in double quotes, as shown in this example with metafield_custom_label_0.

Lastly, set the conditions to only apply when both metafield_custom_product and metafield_custom_label_0 are “not empty.”

Then click Save.

Step 4:

Compile the feed, then download the Feed Preview to confirm that the product_detail values look as expected.

The basic structure

Each product detail has three parts—all in one line, separated by colons:

1. Section name (optional but recommended) — e.g., General, Dimensions, System
2. Attribute name — what you’re describing (e.g., Capacity, Size)
3. Attribute value — the detail/description

Format:

section_name:attribute_name:attribute_value

Include multiple product details in the same cell, separated by commas.

Importing via CSV/Sheets? Put the entire Product Details string in a single cell. Separate each detail with a comma.

Handling commas, colons & quotes

If your values contain commas or colons, wrap that part in straight double quotes ("). If your text includes inch marks (double quotes), double them (" → "").

Important: Use straight quotes ("), not curly/smart quotes. Curly quotes can cause parsing errors.

Pro tips for GoDataFeed users

• Be consistent with section names (e.g., always use Dimensions instead of Size Specs).
• Avoid extra punctuation or line breaks inside the same cell.
• Preview your feed in GoDataFeed before publishing to confirm formatting looks correct.
• Validate in GMC using Feed Diagnostics after upload to confirm the bullets look right.
• Keep it scannable: concise attribute names and values perform best.
